You’d say Luxembourg is just a town – and it’s true, although the more accurate description would be “city-state”. Anyway, regardless of denomination, it’s a small European gem that surely deserves all the attention and – at least this is what I personally feel – more tourist appreciation then it is getting these days. So today I suggest exploring the medieval side of Luxembourg.
Join us as we explore the most beautiful and outstanding attractions in town, which will take you back in time to days when time passed slower and knights fought for the heart of damzels…
But back to Luxembourg: here are its most emblematic medieval sites:
Beaufort Castle is a 12th-century lovely relic with an adjacent Neo-Gothic church to explore located in the region of Mullerthal. The setting is peaceful and beautiful, offering an ample view over the green countryside and the forested hills that surround the old citadel.
The Luxembourg Bock cliff and its casements create a network of fortifications and underground tunnels that measure over 20 kilometers in length. The relics of the old castle, as well as those of the 1390 Wenceslas wall are still visible and can best be explored on foot.
The countryside around the city of Luxembourg offers a true oasis of quiet and tranquility. One of the most emblematic sites in the Ardennes region, however, is the 10th-century Bourscheid Castle, perched high on a 137 meters high peak. The old medieval fort has been restored and can be visited with an audio guide. You are free to roam around the gardens and then visit the village. Also, the castle shines best at night.
Also at night, you should sample the exquisite bars and restaurants in the city. If transport is an issue, you should book a Luxembourg Airport transfer to take you wherever you like to go in this amazing city-state.
