Though one experience doesn’t preclude the other – nor is one better than the other – there are people who, instead of re-reading a book, prefer to watch the movie adaptation. We suggest reading the book and watching the movie as well – like we said, both reading a book and watching a movie makes for an excellent pastime. But regardless on your decision in this matter, here is our Top recent movies based on books.
Here are a few suggestions for movies or series based on books to watch:
George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones decidedly deserves the first mention on our list. The absolutely epic saga (epic from more than one point of view) mixes fantasy and (pseudo-) history in an intricate narrative of war and legend which takes place in the fictional continent of Westeros. Seven HBO TV seasons have been confirmed (with the 6th season airing currently) and since the series premiere on April 17th 2011, the popularity of the franchise has only increased.
Starting with 2014, the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon has been transposed to the small screen as the successful American-British Starz production. The saga follows the adventures of time-traveler 20th-century British nurse Claire Beauchamp, who is swept back in time to 18th-century Scotland, where she finds love, danger and more adventures than could fit in a thousand pages. (That’s why the ongoing Outlander book series consists of eight novels of about 1000 pages each!).
The touching Jojo Moyes 2012 novel Me Before You has been adapted for the big screen. Romantic girls all over the world are waiting forward to the cinema premiere of this upcoming movie in June 2016. Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke (whom you can also see in Game of Thrones) star in this heartwarming romance.
If you haven’t read the Divergent series by Veronica Roth (and if you are into post-apocalyptic scenarios and teen literature in the Hunger Games style – another winner on our list), you should definitely put both the books and the movies on your list!
