Early in the morning of our sixth day, we will leave the grand urban life behind and head for the quiet haven of the mighty Swiss Alps.
First stop: Engelberg resort, where we can take the cable car to the summit of the ever-frozen Mt. Titlis (info in the box that’s below).
Beware, though: the journey to the top is long and requires three stops, although the effort will be worth it. Plus you’ll have the chance to board the first revolving gondola in the world, called the Titlis Rotair, a perfect vantage point for the most spectacular views over the glaciers, lush forests, winding valleys and summits below. On top, you can take a moment to breathe in the crisp air and take a beautiful phono on the sun terrace. We’ll also cross the highest suspension bridge in Europe, also at Mt. Titlis. When we’ve had enough of the altitude, we’ll descend across the hills and stop by the lakeside. Some say that the way to taste the real feel of Switzerland is to visit Lucerne, a wonderfully picturesque town that makes the subject of so many postcard images, with its lakes and pastures, edelweiss-filled meadows and Alpine villages hiding at the foot of the imposing mountains.
We’ll have plenty of time to wander about and even admire the Lion Monument, famously described by Mark Twain as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”. But don’t let that spot bring you down: the city is a happy, sunny place and in the afternoon, we can take a moment to eat chocolate and shop for souvenirs and then embark for our trip to Zurich at Lucerne Central Station.
We’ll stay in Zurich or nearby overnight. The hotels we usually use are Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport and Park Inn by Radisson Hotel Zurich Airport but you may be accommodated in a different but equal three-star hotel in the city or a city nearby.
More about Mount Titlis
Covered in snow all year round, the mighty Mount Titlis is one of the most popular skiing destinations in Switzerland. But even if gliding on the pristine snow isn’t exactly your activity of choice, you can hike around the glaciers, explore the caves or simply walk over the highest suspension bridge found in Europe. Mount Titlis is also renowned for featuring the first revolving cable car, the Titlis Rotair, which affords the most scenic views over the mountainous landscape below.
